At around 9.00 pm on Thursday, gunshots were heard on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris.
The avenue was subsequently evacuated by the national police in order to establish a security cordon.
Three police officers were shot and wounded, and the gunman was shot dead.
Numerous police officers from the 8th arrondissement police station, around twenty CRS vehicles, the BRI, soldiers from Operation ‘Sentinelle’, bomb disposal experts, the SAMU, the Paris fire brigade, a civil protection helicopter and the public prosecutor François Molins are at the scene.
21:28 : The "Alliance" police union has announced the death of one of the three police officers; his two colleagues have been injured, one of them seriously (a critical emergency).
22:10 : The counter-terrorism unit has just been put in charge of the investigation by the DGSI.
22:47 : The spokesperson for the Home Office has denied rumours that a second police officer has died.
22:55 : The Minister of the Interior has just joined the Prime Minister and the President of the Republic at the Élysée Palace for a crisis meeting; François Hollande will then address the media.
23:04 : The police have confirmed that there is no second attacker on the run.
