The story of a business jet that became a sentinel

The King Air B200 was not originally designed as a rescue aircraft. Designed by the American aircraft manufacturer Beechcraft as a successor to the 1970s Super King Air, it is a twin-engine turboprop business and regional aircraft, renowned for its reliability, comfort and range. Thousands of these aircraft are in service worldwide, from private companies to the armed forces.

The French Civil Protection service brought its three aircraft into service in the early 1990s for liaison and command duties. Over the course of several summers, their role in fighting forest fires became increasingly important: as they were unable to drop water, they became the eyes and the voice of the air force. A status enshrined by their integration into the European Module French — a ‘Bengale’ paired with two ‘Pélican’s’ — deployed throughout the Mediterranean basin, and even as far as Sweden.

The anatomy of a coordination aircraft

No cargo hold, but a driver’s cab

Whereas the Canadair and the Dash have their undersides taken up by fuel tanks, the B200 retains a undamaged cabin : it accommodates the coordinator, their radio equipment and, depending on the mission, passengers or light cargo.

Two Pratt & Whitney PT6A turboprop engines

Both PT6A with approximately 850 ch propel the aircraft to nearly 500 km/h and enable it to maintain its altitude for a long time — an essential requirement for keeping an overview of the fire.

An optronic ball to pierce the smoke

Two of the three aircraft are fitted with a Star SAFIRE optronic ball : a stabilised camera combining visible and infrared sensors, capable of locating active fire sources even through smoke.

Bengale, Investigation, Icare: the three faces of the same aeroplane

No other aircraft in the fleet fulfils so many roles. Depending on the day’s mission, the B200 takes on three very distinct roles.

‘Bengal’: the connection

This is the basic identification, followed by the aircraft’s number — Bengale 97, for example. In this role, the aircraft carries personnel, officials or small consignments of cargo, and provides crew rotations to secondary bases that are operational during the summer.

‘Bengale Investigation’: the reconnaissance mission

When a fire breaks out, the aircraft switches to reconnaissance mode: it flies over the area, assesses the scale of the incident, identifies active fire fronts and access routes, and relays this vital information to the command centre — with two aircraft equipped with optronic sensors providing support.

‘Icare’: coordination

Its most strategic role. When several types of aircraft are deployed on a long-term basis to tackle the same fire, the B200 becomes Icarus. A coordinator — himself a water-bombing pilot — boards the aircraft ; the aircraft then becomes a mobile air traffic control centre: it allocates targets amongst aeroplanes and helicopters, and amongst aircraft carrying water and retardant, and issues the drop authorisations.

Why a big fire needs a conductor

Picture the scene: above the same fire, a relay of four Canadair, two Dash 8, several water-bombing helicopters and a reconnaissance Dragon. Without coordination, it’s chaos — and there’s a risk of collision.

The B200 ‘Icare’ solves this problem. At altitude, it has a overview which neither the crews flying close to the flames nor the rescue operations commander (COS) on the ground possess. It coordinates the flight sequences, spreads the drops out spatially and temporally, adjusts priorities according to how the fire is developing — and ensures that every litre falls in the right place at the right time. Ultimately, it is this system that ensures the radio link a constant connection between the sky and the ground.

The summer of 2026 provided a real-life demonstration of this: introducing an ever-more-diverse array of aircraft into the mix — Canadair, Dash, heavy helicopters, chartered Air Tractors, right up to theMilitary A400M deployed in Gironde — maintaining the rhythm of the rotating cast is precisely what Icare does best. The more the sky fills with characters, the more indispensable the conductor becomes.

The 2026 fleet: three refurbished Bengale vessels rather than new ones

The Civil Protection Service operates three B200s — Bengal 96, 97 and 98 — stationed at Nîmes-Garons alongside the 12 Canadairs and 8 Dash aircraft. A fleet modest in size, but of major strategic importance.

Having entered service over thirty years ago, the aircraft were showing their age: spartan comfort, outdated avionics, and no modern surveillance capabilities. Rather than replacing them — a Beech 350 had at one point been mooted — the Civil Protection Agency chose to carry out a major refurbishment : digital avionics, refurbished interior, new yellow and red livery in line with the common guidelines for national assets. Most importantly, two of the three aircraft have received their optronic ball, which transforms a simple shuttle aircraft into a fully-fledged aerial intelligence platform.

Outside the fire season, the Bengale helicopters are kept busy: liaison flights for the Home Office, transporting officials, crew rotations — and sometimes urgent transport for organ donations. The challenge for the coming years is to fit more aircraft with sensors and further streamline the sharing of information between the Bengale and the Dragon helicopters and ground control.

Comparing the B200 to a water bomber doesn’t really make sense: they don’t do the same job. One coordinates, the other strikes. But one never goes without the other.
