Elections: 50,000 police officers and military personnel mobilised on Sunday

This presidential election is taking place under a state of emergency. To ensure security during the second round of this election, around 50,000 police officers and military personnel (including the gendarmerie) from Operation Sentinelle will be deployed across France. The spokesperson for the Minister of the Interior has announced that these personnel will be deployed “around polling stations and to intervene immediately in the event of an incident. [...] Our law enforcement agencies will also be particularly mobilised to ensure the safety of the celebrations, gatherings and demonstrations that will take place once the results have been announced’. On the evening of the first round, 143 people were arrested following a number of scuffles with the police. Six police officers and three demonstrators sustained minor injuries.
