Two police officers were attacked in Mayotte; one of them was seriously injured. He was hit in the face by a stone and had to be taken to hospital.
At around 2 am on Sunday, a patrol was pelted with stones in Pamanzi and Labatoir.
One of the two gendarmes had to be rushed to the intensive care unit at Mamoudzou Hospital. This gendarme is the second-in-command of the Mayotte Gendarmerie Group.
Matthias Fekl (Minister for the Interior) and Ericka Bareigts (Minister for Overseas Territories) have issued a joint statement in which they condemn ""the cowardly attack" of that police officer who claimed "the safety of our fellow citizens in Mayotte".
They claim that "Every effort will be made to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are tracked down and brought to justice".
The two ministers have sent their best wishes for a speedy recovery and their support to his family.
A platoon from the mobile gendarmerie has been deployed to reinforce the gendarmes of the territorial unit in order to secure sensitive locations on the island.
