An explosion took place on Tuesday evening at Brussels Central Station, following which a man was shot dead by Belgian soldiers responsible for securing the site.

Panic and the station evacuated

At 9.30 pm, the Brussels police reported that an incident was taking place at the station. The police subsequently added that “the situation is under control”, asking people to follow the instructions of the Belgian National Railway Company (SNCB). Rail services were suspended on the orders of the police. The station and Brussels’ Grand Place were evacuated following the explosion, and a security cordon was established.

Attackers armed with explosives

The attacker is believed to have left a suitcase containing explosives a few metres from the ticket counters and then left before detonating it. He was carrying a rucksack, the contents of which are unknown, and may have been wearing an explosive belt.
