Manche (50): One year in prison for assaulting a gendarme at his home

On Sunday 6 August, police officers in La Haye-Pesnel recovered a stolen vehicle; a 20-year-old man was found asleep inside and was also in possession of drugs. He was subsequently taken into custody. He was released at around 8 pm with a summons to appear in court for an immediate hearing. At around 11 pm, the man entered the gendarmerie’s accommodation compound. The man asked a gendarme for a cigarette, to which the gendarme replied that he had no business being there. He entered the gendarme’s home and punched and bit him. Several gendarmes arrived very quickly to subdue the attacker. The gendarme who was attacked was unable to work for five days. The court sentenced the man to one year in prison, six months of which are to be served without parole. He will also be required to work or undertake training, receive psychological treatment and compensate the victims. He has also been banned from entering the municipality of La Haye-Pesnel.
