STATEMENT. The Marseille Marine Fire Brigade (BMPM) was called out to attend to a dockworker who had reportedly fallen on Saturday morning at the main seaport in Marseille.
On arrival at the scene, BMPM personnel confirmed that a dockworker in his thirties had fallen from a container whilst helping to load a ship. The container was at the bottom of a hold 12 metres deep.
Le Grimp called in as reinforcements
Given the dizzying height, the specialist operational unit – SOS – of the Reconnaissance and Intervention in Hazardous Environments Group – GRIMP – was called in to provide backup. Using the equipment at their disposal and a handling crane, the firefighters managed to rescue the injured man and place him on a stretcher.
He was taken to hospital, where he is reported to be suffering from pain in his pelvis. The operation required four vehicles and 11 marine firefighters.
