A fire has broken out in a pine forest near the town of Fréjus (83) in the Var department, near the Route de Malpasset and the A8 motorway. Several ground and air resources are currently being deployed to the scene of the fire to combat the rapid spread of the flames, which is being driven by strong winds. At present, no fewer than 170 firefighters are battling the flames, along with 2 Trackers, 5 Canadairs, 1 Dash and 2 HBEs.

Update: At 7.30 pm, more than 200 firefighters were on the scene, along with numerous aerial resources. More than 40 hectares have already been burnt.

Update on 2 September 2017 at 8.00 am: A fire broke out in the middle of the afternoon on Friday 1 September at the Capitou toll booth near Fréjus in the Var. Fanned by strong winds, it grew in intensity and ravaged more than 50 hectares. Major emergency resources were deployed (more than 300 firefighters and aerial support). At 10.00 pm, the fire was brought under control and has been under surveillance ever since.

UPDATE at 11.00: The fire has reignited due to the mistral.

UPDATE at 12.20 pm: Fire still burning; 240 firefighters and 62 vehicles have been deployed for the day, with the support of two GIFF units

Several units have been sent to the area as reinforcements.
