From 1 January 2018, new drivers will be required to know how to administer first aid. Driving schools will therefore be required to train their pupils in first aid. During the practical test, the examiner must ask the candidate a question about first aid procedures. This requirement is set out in the Order of 6 October 2017 amending the Order of 19 February 2010 concerning the procedures for the practical test for the Category B/B1 driving licence.

Saving 300 lives a year

The aim is to ensure that witnesses to a road traffic accident know how to assist victims before the emergency services arrive. Every year, between 250 and 350 lives could be saved if witnesses knew how to perform first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
