The government is more committed than ever to road safety. This Tuesday, Edouard Philippe is expected to announce, during an interministerial meeting on road safety, a reduction in the speed limit from 90 to 80 kilometres per hour on certain roads across France. In taking this step, the Prime Minister is facing up to the reality: he knows it will be unpopular, but he is already defending it tooth and nail, refusing to accept it as inevitable.
However, according to a report from our colleagues at RTL, whilst at present you risk having 3 points deducted from your licence and a fine of 135 euros for using a mobile phone whilst driving. From now on, your driving licence could also be suspended for a period yet to be determined, though some suggest it could be three months. At the end of this period, your licence will be returned to you.
According to the same source, there will be aggravating circumstances that may justify such a suspension: for example, if you are caught near a pedestrian crossing or a school.
