METROPOLITAN NEWS. Philippe Saurel, the mayor of Montpellier and president of the metropolitan authority, recently offered Kléber Mesquida, the president of the departmental council, a plot of land on which to build the new fire station, which has been eagerly awaited by the SDIS 34, the firefighters and local councillors.

The site is situated between Avenue de la Liberté and the railway premises of Montpellier SNCF station, along Boulevard Jacques Fabre de Morlhon, in the Près-d’Arènes neighbourhood, according to our information, which was confirmed on Monday evening by the Hérault Department.

Studies launched

Kléber Mesquida spoke about this proposal from the Montpellier metropolitan authority on Saturday morning, during the ceremony at which the Prefect presented the Fourragère to the Hérault departmental fire service.

Various studies, including technical ones, have been launched jointly by the metropolitan authority’s departments and the management of SDIS 34. The proposed site appears to be ideally situated, particularly as it is close to access points for the A9, A709 and A750 motorways and to towns within the metropolitan area. It remains to be seen whether it will be suitable for the establishment of a main emergency services centre.

Colonel Éric Florès, director of SDIS 34, confirmed the news on Monday evening at Metropolitan, without going into further detail – and for good reason: we have to wait for the results of all the studies.

Kléber Mesquida believes that the construction of a third fire station in Montpellier – which is now essential – will relieve the pressure on the stations at La Mosson-la Paillade (Jean Guizonnier) and Montaubérou-le Millénaire (Max Dormoy), which are under heavy strain on a daily basis.
