A 23-year-old volunteer firefighter from the Gigean emergency response centre was injured on Wednesday afternoon whilst fighting a brush fire, not far from the RD 2, between the towns of Gigean and Poussan, north-east of the Thau lagoon.
The young firefighter was on duty aboard a forest fire tanker (CCF) belonging to SDIS 34 when he apparently fell, sustaining an injury to his lower leg. Conscious and with only minor injuries, he was assisted by his colleagues and then taken by the fire service ambulance from the Loupian station to the A&E department of the nearest hospital. X-rays and further examinations will determine whether he has suffered a fracture – which seems unlikely – or rather a severe sprain.
The alarm was raised at around 3.45 pm on Wednesday regarding a scrub fire at a place known as Le Réa, where the fire brigades from Gigean, Montbazin, Montagnac, Mèze and Bouzigues were mobilised as the equivalent of a forest fire response unit (GIFF), which helped to limit the area affected by the fire.
