A hostage situation is currently underway at a Super U supermarket in Trèbes, east of Carcassonne. A 26-year-old man entered the supermarket on Friday morning and gunshots were heard. There are reportedly at least three dead: the passenger in the vehicle he stole to get to the supermarket, and two other people inside the Super U. According to the public prosecutor’s office, he claims to be affiliated with Daesh and is demanding the release of Salah Abdeslam. The case has been referred to the anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office, and the DGSI and SDAT are leading the investigation.
The BRI unit from the Montpellier SRPJ and the Toulouse branch of the GIGN are on the scene. Public Prosecutor François Molins and the Home Secretary are on their way to the scene. 14:40: The assault is over; the suspect has been shot dead.
A few minutes earlier, a CRS officer was shot and wounded by an armed man in Carcassonne. He was out jogging with three colleagues; they were about to return to the CRS barracks in Carcassonne when the gunman opened fire from his car. The same vehicle then drove off, and the man at the wheel subsequently entered a Super U supermarket with his weapon.
