On Wednesday afternoon, a 19-year-old motorcyclist refused to stop at a roadside check in Artemare, colliding with a gendarme as he was riding without a licence or insurance. Following appeals for witnesses issued by the police, he eventually turned himself in to the Belley Criminal Investigation Unit to admit that he had refused to comply. The gendarme who was struck was taken to hospital, where his right leg had to be amputated; he also suffered a fracture to his left leg. The motorcyclist was subsequently taken into custody at the Belley gendarmerie.
