Perpignan: a prisoner commits suicide by hanging

An inmate at Perpignan Prison took his own life on Monday afternoon, according to our colleagues at La Clau. The man, aged around forty, took his own life by hanging himself whilst his two cellmates were out on a walk. CPR administered by two prison officers who rushed to the scene immediately, followed by the victim’s transfer to Saint-Jean Hospital, proved insufficient. Following the suicide, several letters were found, but their contents have not been disclosed by the prison authorities. Such tragedies are relatively rare at Perpignan Prison, where two similar incidents were recorded in 2009. The one that received the most media attention involved the mayor of Saint-Cyprien, Jacques Bouille, who was imprisoned after being implicated by the courts in the art scandal concerning his municipality.
