Within a matter of days, the government shut down the SAIP app, which had proved a complete failure, and announced a partnership with major players, notably social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, to alert the public in the event of major incidents.
This replacement does not appear to be sufficient in the eyes of the European Union, and with good reason: an agreement was reached this Wednesday to make SMS alerts compulsory in all Member States. As a result, very soon, the public should be alerted to major incidents via a simple text message on their mobile phones.
