A plane crashed on Wednesday shortly after 1.00 pm at La Môle Airport in the Var, according to our colleagues at Var Matin. The aircraft, a light twin-engine jet, which had been flying from Figari (Southern Corsica), crashed at the end of the runway whilst attempting to land.
Whilst initial reports indicated that three people had been seriously injured, the final tally is two. They are the pilot and co-pilot of the aircraft, a man and a woman of German nationality. The co-pilot, who was seriously injured but whose condition is not life-threatening, was airlifted by helicopter to Sainte-Anne Hospital in Toulon. The pilot, who sustained less serious injuries, was taken to the Gassin medical centre.
Risk of pollution
Thirty firefighters were deployed to the scene, along with the SMUR and the gendarmerie. The Var Prefecture has also announced that government departments and their partners have been mobilised to prevent and deal with any pollution in the River La Môle that may result from this accident.
