Rumours had been circulating for some time. Following in the footsteps of the SDIS for Seine-et-Marne and Oise at the end of June, the SDMIS 69 is set to amend its internal regulations to introduce a "across-the-board pay cut for all operational firefighters". A revolution that is dividing people into those for and against beards, and which could well spread to other SISs in the near future.
The decree amending an article of the internal regulations governing the fire service in the Rhône department and the Lyon metropolitan area is expected to be presented to the board of directors within the next few days. Indeed, ensuring "to ensure effective sealing and prevent any leak that might endanger the firefighter or any other personnel involved" is a key priority for the management of SDMIS 69, based on "the national guidelines on the prevention of toxicity risks associated with fire smoke".
Manufacturers just laugh it off!

Out of curiosity, we contacted manufacturers of respiratory protective equipment. They all admit it! "We haven’t taken fashion into account in our marketing... and we’re getting a lot of feedback from both beard enthusiasts and those who aren’t fans. By phone, by post, by email... It never stops! We prefer to have a laugh about it..." an employee of a well-known company specialising in firefighter equipment told our editorial team, adding that a beard no longer guaranteed a perfect seal.
What you need to know
Article 8 of the Order of 8 April 2015, which sets out the attire, uniforms, equipment, insignia and accoutrements of firefighters, stipulates that, "Shaving is essential before starting work" and that "In the specific case of beards or moustaches, these must be neatly trimmed to ensure that face masks can be worn as effectively as possible". Clearly, the beard must be shaved or neatly trimmed – which leaves room for wordplay and different interpretations.
However, the instruction manuals state on the first page that you must never use a mask without first having read and understood the instructions contained in the manuals, before adding that "Wearing a beard (short or long) and sideburns prevents the facepiece from forming a tight seal, as facial hair interferes with the suction effect. Do not use this breathing apparatus if your face is not properly shaved.". This clause could well be highlighted by insurance companies should an agent be involved in an accident.
