The French civil protection model, which is internationally recognised, is based on a careful balance between professionals and volunteers. Indeed, of the 246,800 firefighters across the country, 40,600 (16 per cent) professional firefighters and 12,300 (5 per cent) military firefighters work alongside more than 193,800 (79 per cent) volunteers. It is therefore a key pillar of the service.
They all risk their lives to rescue our fellow citizens and to protect our country. Called upon to respond to both major crises (natural or industrial disasters, terrorism) and everyday incidents (fires, rescuing people), they are now increasingly relied upon by our fellow citizens and the public authorities.
The figures speak for themselves
In 2016, the fire service:
- The following have received 17,835,000 calls (18 and 112).
- Produced by 4,453,000 operations, including 285,661 fire incidents, 3,793,750 emergency rescues, 52,916 operations relating to technological hazards and 410,030 other rescue operations.
- 3,645,924 victims supported (+3.2%), or 10,000 victims treated each day.
- 1 call-out every 7 seconds and 400 emergency and victim-assistance vehicles (VSAV) deployed every hour.
