The first major fire of the season broke out in California between Sunday and Monday, burning thousands of hectares, destroying several homes and forcing hundreds of residents to flee.

Known as the Pawnee Fire, the blaze is so destructive that Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency. The fire is located approximately 100 kilometres north of Sacramento.

On Monday evening, according to the authorities, the Pawnee Fire had ravaged more than 10,000 hectares of mainly rural and sparsely populated land, destroyed at least 22 buildings and was threatening a further 600. More than 1,500 people were also evacuated.
