On Wednesday, a man appeared before the Tulle Magistrates’ Court for a summary hearing. He had called the police, the fire brigade and the ambulance service via the emergency numbers more than 450 times in less than a year and a half. In May 2017, he began by dialling the emergency numbers 153 times. Then, on the evening of the Football World Cup final, he did it again, making 69 calls. A few days later, he contacted the emergency services more than 150 times. According to his lawyer, “He needs psychiatric care but everyone’s just passing the buck. Those calls were his way of saying that he’s waiting for us to come to him." He will be charged for the calls he made to the emergency services. He will also have to pay €1 in damages. He has been sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment, three of which are to be served without parole, and two years’ probation. He has also been ordered to undergo treatment and is banned from entering drinking establishments upon his release from prison.
