The flames are ravaging the vegetation, which has been left extremely dry by the heatwave: southern Spain is in the grip of major wildfires.   In Portugal, firefighters are battling a massive wildfire in the Algarve region, as the country faces scorching temperatures. The flames are reaching above the treetops. In Monchique, in the south of the country, a forest fire has been raging for more than 72 hours. More than 1,000 hectares have already gone up in smoke. Some 800 firefighters, supported by 12 water-bombing aircraft and helicopters, are attempting to bring the flames under control as they spread along two fronts. Despite the intervention of Canadair aircraft, the flames continue to spread as residents look on helplessly. Some have no choice but to leave. As a precautionary measure, two villages have had to be evacuated. The country is still reeling from the devastating fires of summer 2017, which claimed 114 lives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2UuS38AesI   Photo: AFP
