LATEST NEWS. According to the metro police, a violent fire broke out at around 9.15 pm on Saturday in the 15-storey Gayonne tower, in the heart of the Cité de la Devèze housing estate in Béziers.
Three flats on the 11th and 12th floors are on fire, with a risk of the flames spreading to other adjoining flats as they lick the exterior walls.
40 evacuations
40 residents of the tower block were evacuated without incident. Firefighters from SDIS 34 deployed crews from the fire stations in Béziers, Pézenas, Sérignan and Valras, including two large aerial ladders and three urban fire-fighting vehicles. Paramedics from SDIS 34 are also at the scene.
The area has been cordoned off by municipal and national police to ensure the fire service’s operations are not hindered.
