The Alpes-de-Haute-Provence Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS 04) organised an event on Friday 12 October his second ceremony in honour of the firefighters of the Departmental Fire Service. It was also an opportunity to thank the employers of firefighters. The SDIS 04’s initiative to promote recognition of the growth in voluntary service is in line with national initiatives led by the Directorate-General for Civil Security and Crisis Management. Last year, the Directorate-General launched an action plan comprising various measures, including recognising the commitment shown by volunteer firefighters and acknowledging their employers. Attended by the department’s highest-ranking officials, the evening provided an opportunity not only to honour the commitment of these men and women, to reward them for their work in various fields, and to hear their testimonies and personal experiences…but also to highlight the civic commitment shown by local employers towards the fire service.   The categories honoured were young firefighters, former firefighters, athletes who have achieved a podium finish at regional, national or international level, the fire station with the highest number of on-call hours, and the volunteer firefighter who has provided the highest number of on-call hours. In addition, bronze or gold star insignia were awarded to station commanders who have completed the required number of years of service; the authorities then presented the ‘fire service partner employer’ label and trophy ’ label and trophy, as well as the ‘SDIS Partners’ trophy, to companies that have helped the SDIS in its work, and the jury’s special prize for a communication campaign promoting volunteering.   A wonderful evening in honour of volunteering.
