According to the fire brigade, three hoses had been set up to contain the fire when an explosion occurred in the sewers. Whilst the fire was being extinguished, fuel from the vehicle seeped into the underground area, forming a gas pocket.
GRDF called in to help
Upon coming into contact with an ignition source, the mixture eventually exploded, causing several manhole covers to be blown up in the street and injuring six members of the National Gendarmerie and the chief officer of the fire brigade.
Following the explosion and once the fire had been extinguished, GRDF carried out inspections using a catharometer. The results proved to be negative.
