The victim is conscious

  • remove the victim from any factors that may have triggered the attack (smoky or polluted air, dust);
  • help the victim to rest and position them in the position in which they find it easiest to breathe; this is often a sitting 14 or semi-sitting position;
  • unfasten anything that might restrict her breathing;
  • reassure the victim and ask them to stay calm;
  • help the victim take the medication prescribed for the attack, if they have any with them. It is usually administered using a metered-dose inhaler;
  • administer oxygen by inhalation if necessary;
  • seek medical advice by forwarding the test results;
  • Monitor the victim, paying particular attention to their breathing.

If the victim loses consciousness

  • Follow the procedure for cardiac arrest if the victim loses consciousness and is not breathing.
