Spontaneous bleeding or bleeding following a minor impact

  • sit the victim up, with their head tilted forwards, to prevent them from swallowing their own blood;
  • ask the victim to:
    • blow your nose vigorously, then;
    • immediately pinch your nostrils shut with your thumb and forefinger for ten minutes;
    • breathe through your mouth, without speaking.
  • If the bleeding does not stop after ten minutes, seek medical advice.

Following a fall

  • Follow the guidelines for managing facial trauma.

PLEASE NOTE: Blowing your nose vigorously is important for the effectiveness of the action, as it helps to remove blood clots. You must apply pressure to your nose quickly to prevent a clot from reforming.
