Protection against carbon monoxide

To address this risk2, the following measures should be taken:

  • evacuate everyone from the room in question and gather them together;
  • ventilate the room(s) thoroughly; In this case, the responder enters the room whilst holding their breath.
  • Alert the fire brigade immediately; they are equipped, in particular, with detectors for this gas
  • whilst waiting for the emergency services, look for or identify any appliance that might produce CO (a brazier, an internal combustion engine, car exhaust fumes in an enclosed space, a chimney, a water heater, etc.);
  • stop the appliance from operating;
  • wait for the emergency services.
