If the emergency services are in vehicles, they should:
- use any collective safety measures they have (such as flashing lights, etc.);
- switch on the vehicle’s hazard warning lights as soon as it approaches the scene of the accident and slow down;
- park your vehicle, if possible beyond the scene of the accident, on the hard shoulder or emergency lane on expressways or motorways;
- Put on a high-visibility safety vest before you even leave the vehicle.
In any case, to prevent a secondary accident, you should:
- place warning signs, or have them placed, on either side of the accident, at a distance of 150 to 200 metres, using a warning triangle (except on expressways or motorways) or a torch, a white cloth, or the vehicle’s hazard warning lights;
- prohibit anyone from approaching if a hazard persists (e.g. a leak of hazardous substances, an electrical hazard, etc.);
- do not smoke and do not allow others to smoke;
- if a fire breaks out in the engine compartment, use a fire extinguisher or earth;
- Switch off the ignition on each vehicle involved in the accident; if the vehicle has a key or remote start card, move the card more than 5 metres away from the vehicle.
- Apply the handbrake or chock the vehicle.
