Following the resurgence of the ‘yellow vests’ protests observed this Saturday across France, the Prime Minister wishes to demonstrate, through new announcements, the firm stance the government intends to take in the face of violence.
Edouard Philippe will be a guest on TF1’s 8.00 pm news programme this Monday evening to announce new “public order” measures following the further violent clashes during the 8th day of national protests by the ‘yellow vests’ this weekend, Agence France-Presse (AFP) has learnt from Matignon.
"In the face of the unacceptable violence that continues across the country, the government intends to take a very firm stance and to develop its public order measures. These are sensitive issues on which the Prime Minister has held consultations and will make announcements this evening," Matignon said.
When contacted by BFMTV, Matignon stated that the Prime Minister was due to hold further consultations on Monday afternoon. Specifically, Édouard Philippe was due to meet with trade union leaders, political figures and MPs from the ruling party. “He does not wish to improvise or make hasty decisions. He wants a reasonable approach,” we were told.
Operational issues
According to BFMTV’s report, the Prime Minister’s announcements could take place in two stages. In the first stage, he will have to address operational issues: how should demonstrations that are likely to take place again next Saturday be managed? In the second stage, he will address legal issues.
