A man in his fifties has been taken into police custody after deliberately setting fire to his house on Monday in Bergerac, in the Dordogne.
According to reports from our colleagues at France Bleu, the man set fire to his own home in the afternoon by heating oil in a saucepan on his gas hob.
The emergency services were alerted by his neighbour. When they arrived, the man in his fifties was standing in front of his burning house, watching the blaze.
He will be summoned to court
The man was taken into police custody. He told the investigators that he thought his house was “too dilapidated” and that he had therefore tried to clean it in this way.
As the psychological assessment has concluded that he can be prosecuted, he will be summoned to appear in court at a later date.
