On Saturday evening at 8 pm, the Paris Fire Brigade revealed the identities of the two firefighters who lost their lives in this tragic explosion. They were Senior Corporal Simon Cartannaz, aged 28, and Nathanael Josselin, aged 27. Both were stationed at the Château-d’Eau fire station (10th arrondissement).
The first was originally from Entremont-le-Vieux (Savoie), it emerges Le Dauphiné Libéré. Simon Cartannaz was the first to enter the building. He had joined the BSPP five and a half years ago. Prior to that, he had been a volunteer firefighter at the Entremont-le-Vieux fire station. In a statement published on Twitter, Louis Laugier, the Prefect of Savoie, and Gaston Arthaud-Berthet, the chairman of the board of directors of the departmental fire and rescue service, offered “their sincere condolences to his family, loved ones and comrades-in-arms, as well as to the family and loved ones of the second firefighter who died this morning during the same operation”.
Nathanael Josselin was the driver of the vehicle. The father of a four-year-old boy had “also been a volunteer firefighter in Brienon-sur-Armançon since 1July 2007, when he had been particularly involved in running the youth fire brigade section ”, announced the Yonne Fire Service on their Facebook page.
A third firefighter was briefly searched for in the rubble of the building on Rue de Trévise. Buried under the rubble, he was “rescued by his colleagues”, said Commander Eric Moulin to 20 Minutes.
The explosion caused by a gas leak has claimed a third victim: a Spanish tourist. Around fifty people were also injured, ten of whom were seriously injured.
