A firefighter died on Sunday whilst responding to a road accident in Saint-André (Réunion). Another person was seriously injured and taken to hospital. Their condition is critical. Three other people sustained minor injuries, according to our colleagues at The 1st.
According to the same source, there was initially an accident involving a single car that had collided with a low wall. A few minutes later, the fire brigade arrived, split into two teams. One of them was tasked with securing the area.
As a firefighter stepped out of the vehicle to set up warning signs on the road, he was struck head-on by a white van. He was thrown about ten metres, according to an eyewitness at the scene. The firefighter, who was in his fifties and from Saint-André, died as a result of this secondary collision.
In the minutes that followed, another collision occurred. A car collided with the white van. The driver of the van is seriously injured. His condition is critical. These three accidents occurred in quick succession at around 2.30 pm (local time).
