In Tarascon, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, a prisoner escaped whilst being transferred to court on Monday 28 January. He was aided by a “heavily armed” commando unit. Several shots were fired.
According to RTL, the escape took place shortly after 8 am whilst a defendant was being transported from Béziers Prison to the Tarascon District Court. On arrival at the court, whilst the prisoner was being escorted by three prison officers, a group of three armed men threatened them. One officer was struck with the butt of a gun, and the prisoner then fled with his three accomplices.
According to RTL, the man who escaped is a defendant who has been in prison since 26 September 2017 for armed robbery, aggravated robbery and criminal conspiracy. He is not a radicalised prisoner but fits the profile of a ‘major organised crime’ offender.
