Fire in Paris: nine dead and 32 injured, including six firefighters

The toll is devastating: nine tenants have died in a violent fire at an eight-storey block of flats last night in Paris’s 16th arrondissement. A further twenty-six residents and six firefighters from the Paris Fire Brigade were injured and taken to hospital, bringing the total number of injured to thirty-two, one of whom is in a critical condition. Arson The alarm was raised at around 1am on Monday night. By the time the first firefighters arrived, the building was ablaze. The firefighters deployed several ladders and heavy equipment. They carried out 50 rescues during the operation. This morning, the criminal investigation department and the Paris public prosecutor’s office are treating arson as the leading line of inquiry.
