🔥 A major fire broke out on Wednesday, shortly after midday. Several hectares of barley were destroyed. Around thirty firefighters were called in to bring the blaze under control

In view of the rapid spread of the blaze, the fire service deployed significant resources to contain the fire. Six specialist forest fire trucks were sent to the scene, along with a water tender and around thirty firefighters. To help, farmers began ploughing the land to create a barrier between the flames and the rest of the crop on this 25-hectare plot of barley.

There was a significant risk of the fire spreading. The high-speed rail line on the other side of the road could have been at risk. The same was true of the landowner’s farm and their home. “We were a bit lucky, as the wind shifted slightly and pushed the fire back, slowing its spread,” explained a firefighter who found himself on the front line during the operation.
