A violent flare-up is currently taking place in the Lande de Millet area of the municipality of Salles in the Gironde department.

On Sunday 4 August, a violent flare-up of Friday’s fire was reported; a large number of additional resources were called in to support the firefighters who were already battling the flames. Aerial support from the civil protection service is expected.

"Nearly 30 hectares of pine trees under 20 years old went up in smoke again on Sunday in Salles. A fire had destroyed 68 hectares on 16 July and, on Thursday 1 August, a further 5 hectares.

At around 2.30 pm, a fire broke out in the area known as Lande de Millet. Two Canadair aircraft carried out 16 water drops and 70 firefighters were mobilised. The firefighters had to contend, amongst other things, with ‘sautes’ – these are instances of the fire spreading as the wind blows glowing pine cones.” (Sud-Ouest)
