According to a report by our colleagues at France 3 Rhône-Alpes, in conjunction with AFP, three volunteer firefighters from the Lyon Metropolitan Area, as well as from the Ain department, made their way to the administrative court to demand the implementation of a European directive setting out rules on working hours and rest periods for workers.
In 2018, Rudy Matzak and other Belgian volunteer firefighters succeeded in getting the European courts to recognise that "On-call time for a home-based worker who is required to respond to calls from their employer at short notice must be regarded as ‘working time’". In France, no fewer than 200,000 firefighters are directly affected by this directive.
