Australian firefighters announced on Monday that they had successfully brought the country’s largest “mega-fire” – which had been out of control for almost three months – under control, whilst rainy weather is forecast, according to our colleagues at the Huffpost.

Firefighters from the State of New South Wales have said they have finally gained the upper hand in their battle against the huge blaze that was raging out of control in the mountainous area of Gospers, north-west of Sydney.

800,000 hectares destroyed

During a visit to the region on Monday, the head of the rural fire service in New South Wales said that…“There was just one small area left to finish off” but that “The outlook for lockdown seems promising”

In this national park, this “mega-fire” has ravaged an area three times the size of Greater London and sparked further blazes, bringing the total number of hectares destroyed to 800,000 – an area larger than Austria.
