Firefighters have been battling a fierce fire since Tuesday. According to the latest figures as of midday on Thursday, 6,450 hectares have been destroyed in Gironde and 350 in Landes.

Two fire engines were burnt out whilst responding to an incident in the town of Moustey in the Landes department. They were closest to the fire, attempting to bring it under control, but to no avail.

According to Fabien Lainé, an MP for the Landes department, it was not two but three fire engines that were burnt whilst on call-outs.

Whilst no firefighters were injured during this particular operation in the commune of Moustey, a firefighter from a reinforcement unit suffered severe burns to his legs and face in another area. Fortunately, "his life is not in danger", confirms Marc Vermeulen, departmental director of the Gironde Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS).
