A major wildfire has been burning since Tuesday afternoon in the town of Beaucaire, in the Gard department, on the border with the Bouches-du-Rhône.
Firefighters are currently battling the blaze, which is being fanned by particularly strong winds with gusts of up to 80 km/h in the area. Several hectares have been destroyed and several dozen hectares are under threat.
The plume of smoke is visible from several kilometres away. The Civil Protection Service’s water-bombing aircraft, the Milan 78, has been deployed to the fire in an attempt to limit its spread.
