The island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands, is being ravaged by a violent forest fire that has already swept across more than 4,500 hectares in less than 24 hours. The fire broke out this morning in the municipality of Puntagorda. Some 300 firefighters are doing their best to bring the blaze under control, with the help of 10 aerial resources, whilst awaiting reinforcements in the form of water-bombing aircraft. As a precautionary measure, 2,500 residents have been evacuated.
