Summer temperatures continue to rise across most of France, leading to heightened vigilance regarding the risk of wildfires. According to Météo-France, A large part of the country, covering numerous departments, is now under a heatwave alert.
The departments affected include Ain, Allier, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-Maritimes, Ardèche, Ariège, Aude, Aveyron, Bouches-du-Rhône, Cantal, Charente, Cher, Corrèze, Haute-Corse, Côte-d’Or, Dordogne, Doubs, Drôme, Gard, Haute-Garonne, Gers, Gironde, Hérault, Indre, Isère, Jura, Landes, Loire, Haute-Loire, Lot, Lot-et-Garonne, Lozère, Nièvre, Puy-de-Dôme, Pyrénées-Orientales, Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, Rhône, Haute-Saône, Saône-et-Loire, Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne, Var, Vaucluse, Haute-Vienne and the Territoire de Belfort. Furthermore, our neighbours in Andorra have also been placed on an orange heatwave alert, highlighting the widespread nature of this heatwave across south-western Europe.
The risk of wildfires is closely linked to these weather conditions, particularly during the summer months. The heat, combined with dry ground and low ambient humidity, creates an environment conducive to the outbreak of fires. In this context, Forest Fires warns of a significant increase in risk of fire across the Mediterranean region from tomorrow. This geographical area, which, as is the case every year, has already been severely affected by wildfires, requires particular vigilance.
It is therefore crucial to emphasise the importance of following safety guidelines during heatwaves and periods of high fire risk: avoid outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of fluids regularly, do not throw cigarette ends on the ground, and, above all, do not light any fires outdoors, even if they are controlled.
