As part of a significant commitment to strengthen firefighting efforts in the Tarn, a new financial agreement has been drawn up, allocating a budget of 60 million euros for the period 2023–2025 to the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS 81). This 30 per cent increase on the previous budget marks a turning point in the allocation of resources for the prevention and management of forest fires in the region. The Department, the main financial backer of SDIS 81, has been described by its president as making an “unprecedented effort” against a backdrop of tight budgets for local authorities.
This funding will cover a range of critical needs, including the purchase of around 20 new vehicles specialised in fighting forest fires, as well as other essential equipment. In addition, it will contribute to the construction of the new fire station in Castres and the recruitment of volunteer firefighters, thereby addressing the rise in operational costs relating to energy and fuel.
Although 2023 saw a slight decrease in the fire service’s operational activities compared with 2022, which was a particularly busy year for forest fires, officials at SDIS 81 anticipate greater challenges in the future, predicting that quiet summer seasons will become the exception rather than the rule. This outlook highlights the importance of enhanced preparedness and response capacity.
The SDIS 81 does not limit itself to managing traffic lights forest rescue; it also plays a crucial role in road rescue and assisting members of the public, accounting for 88 per cent of its activities. In 2023, the service assisted 21,120 victims and successfully carried out 26 cardiac resuscitations. With this in mind, SDIS 81 is encouraging volunteers trained in first aid to join the “Good Samaritan” scheme, an initiative designed to rapidly mobilise responders in the event of a cardiac arrest, thereby increasing victims’ chances of survival whilst awaiting the arrival of professional emergency services.
This new financial agreement reflects the recognition of the strategic importance of forest fire management and search and rescue operations in the Tarn, and highlights the ongoing commitment of the authorities and emergency services to ensuring the safety of the public.
