In a tragic turn of events on Saturday evening, the Aisne department was the scene of a horrific road accident that claimed the life of a 35-year-old volunteer firefighter. The accident occurred in Trélou-sur-Marne, when a fire engine, en route to an emergency call-out, left the road and overturned, crashing violently into an electricity pole.
The Aisne Prefecture, in an official statement, has clarified the circumstances of the accident: "Early this evening, a fire engine carrying six crew members was involved in a serious accident. Whilst five of the firefighters miraculously escaped serious injury, a 35-year-old sergeant did not survive his injuries despite the efforts of the emergency services.". He was based at the Trélou-sur-Marne fire station.
Response from the Home Secretary
News of his death quickly prompted an outpouring of emotion within the emergency services and beyond. The Prefect of Aisne, Thomas Campeaux, expressed his “deep sadness” and offered his condolences to the family of the deceased, as well as to his loved ones and colleagues, assuring them of his support during this difficult time. Similarly, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, said he was “deeply saddened” by this tragedy, sending his thoughts to the firefighter’s family, his colleagues and all his loved ones.
Solidarity amongst firefighters was also evident, as demonstrated by the firefighters from the Oise department, who expressed their support for their colleagues at SDIS02, who are mourning the loss of this ‘firefighter’. This gesture of solidarity serves as a reminder of the dangerous reality of a firefighter’s job and the importance of community support in the face of such trials.
