A series devastating forest fires is currently ravaging central and southern Chile, plunging the country into a serious crisis. As of 11 February, the Valparaíso region had recorded more than 131 deaths, more than 300 people missing, and more than 40,000 people affected. Indeed, the Chilean President, Gabriel Boric, has described these fires as the “greatest tragedy” since 2010.
Furthermore, Professor Miguel Castillo, from the University of Chile’s Forest Fire Laboratory, highlights the complexity of the factors at play. Looking beyond forest management, he calls for a comprehensive government plan for recovery and prevention. The emergency warning system has come in for criticism due to its lack of information on places of refuge. Indeed, there is a need to introduce more comprehensive fire prevention education.
Furthermore, unregulated urban development in areas such as Valparaíso has contributed to the scale of the fires. The reason for this is the construction of informal homes using flammable materials. Rapid population growth has led to people settling in high-risk areas, making it difficult for the fire service to gain access. The need for careful urban planning is emphasised.

Climatic factors (high temperatures, gusts of wind) created conditions conducive to the rapid spread of the flames. Furthermore, rainfall in 2023 encouraged the growth of flammable vegetation. Climate projections indicate an increased risk of fires in the future.
Finally, the planting of exotic tree species, such as pines and eucalyptus, has altered fire dynamics, leading to an increase in the frequency and extent of fires. Around 70 per cent of these exotic plants originate from fire-prone regions. However, arson is also suspected, which poses challenges in terms of safety and prevention.
