Increased risk of forest fires in Taiwan: the urgent need to adapt to climate change

Researchers from Chung Hsing National University and Utah State University have revealed alarming findings regarding the forest fires to Taiwan, highlighting the growing challenges posed by climate change. According to this study, the risk and severity of forest fires are expected to increase significantly in the coming years. This calls for an urgent reassessment of forest fire management strategies. The dry season, which runs from November to April, could start earlier and last longer, requiring Taiwan to be on heightened alert. Furthermore, historical data on temperature and wind speed in Taiwan already indicate a significant upward trend, creating an environment increasingly conducive to forest fires.

This rise in the number of fires is largely fuelled by human factors, which are responsible for 90 per cent of forest fires. It is therefore essential to raise public awareness further and to strengthen the enforcement of existing regulations. Indeed, human activity, combined with changing climatic conditions, is causing the organic matter in the soil to become drier, thereby significantly increasing the risk of fire.

In light of these challenges, Taiwan must incorporate the latest climate projections into its forest fire risk management strategies. The findings of this study call for a complete overhaul of the Taiwanese government’s forest fire management strategies.

This research also offers valuable insights for other regions of the world facing similar threats, thereby highlighting the universal need to adopt adaptation strategies in the face of climate challenges.

This study highlights a future in which forest fires in Taiwan are becoming more frequent and severe as a result of climate change. Faced with this reality, there is an urgent need to rethink and improve forest fire management strategies by incorporating climate forecasts. This will enable not only Taiwan, but also the whole world, to strengthen its resilience in the face of growing environmental challenges.
