The dawn of 19 February 2024 brought an unexpected disruption to the tranquillity of Hoàng Liên National Park (Vietnam), when more than 10 hectares of its magnificent landscape were engulfed by a devastating fire. However, a surge of solidarity emerged. Indeed, this was not merely a battle against the flames, but a powerful testament to the strength of the community and the unpredictable complexity of nature.
The alert issued in the afternoon quickly mobilised the firefighters and volunteers. However, the village of Séo Mý Tỷ, where the fire broke out, presented unique challenges. This corner of untamed beauty is characterised by steep terrain and dense woodland. Firefighters and volunteers had to contend not only with the fire, but also with a hostile environment. The pre-existing drought and relentless winds fanned the flames across more than 10 hectares of forest.
United against the flames
In response to the call to action, 460 people, including local authorities, residents and the militia, came together. Their aim: to extinguish the flames threatening their land and their livelihoods. This massive mobilisation was not simply a fight against the flames, but also a battle against time and the elements. Strategies were continually adjusted, and efforts continued late into the night. This collective endeavour demonstrates tremendous resilience, with every hand and every heart contributing to the fight.
Whilst the community remains on high alert, the incident at Hoàng Liên National Park serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by forest fires. Beyond the physical battle to extinguish the blaze, the event raises questions about fire prevention and management. Furthermore, the impact of weather conditions raises questions. As the ashes settle and lessons are learnt, this incident will remain etched in people’s memories not only as a fire that was fought, but also as a symbol of resilience and unity in the face of adversity.
