France: climate change and forest fire detection

It is true that climate change is having a significant impact on Sologne, a region situated almost in the centre of France. Consequently, the authorities are planning to introduce a system for detecting and locating fires by early 2025. This system will cover several local authorities across the Loir-et-Cher, Loiret and Cher departments.

Indeed, it aims to respond effectively to the growing threat of forest fires, which is exacerbated by climate change. It is a genuine response to the climate emergency. Indeed, in September 2020, the Sologne region (France) experienced an unprecedented wildfire requiring the deployment of water-bombing aircraft. This is an alarming sign of the impact of global warming. Consequently, in the face of this threat, the government has classified the region as a high-risk forest area, emphasising the need for swift and coordinated action.

Early detection and warning

The scheme will involve the installation of surveillance cameras at strategic locations to enable the early detection of fires. These cameras, capable of detecting smoke from a distance of 20 km, will alert the fire service in under 5 minutes, thereby providing a crucial opportunity to limit the damage. Officials have launched the tender process for this project and plan to start work in July 2024. Estimated to cost 2 million euros, the system is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2025, with particular attention being paid to very high-risk areas.
