The fire brigade in the Orne trained in the Écouves Forest from 8 to 10 April 2024 to prepare for forest fires. They practised offensive and defensive tactics under real-life conditions.
The Orne department organised an intensive training session for its firefighters. This was in preparation for the summer season, which could be marked by forest fires. Over three days in the Écouves Forest, the participants carried out realistic simulation exercises. This enabled them to hone their skills in struggle against forest fires.

Firefighting tactics and specialist techniques

The firefighters’ training began with detailed instructions on the positioning and rapid deployment of equipment. “It is crucial to react quickly to control the spread of a fire,” explained Laetitia Trassard, captain and head of training, speaking to *Ouest France*. The firefighters practised laying out hoses over a distance of several hundred metres. They used specific techniques to maximise the effectiveness of the fire-fighting operation.

Manoeuvres under real-world conditions

The firefighters’ training included simulations carried out at night. The aim was to test the teams’ responsiveness and resilience in the face of unforeseen challenges. The instructors emphasised the need for flawless coordination and clear communication, which are essential in emergency situations. “Every minute counts when it comes to containing a forest fire,” emphasised Mickaël Gandon, a lieutenant and trainer, in an interview with “France Ouest”.

Tough training for firefighters

The programme covered not only fire-fighting techniques but also logistical aspects such as setting up a temporary base camp. This made it possible to simulate the conditions of a prolonged operation. This comprehensive approach aims to prepare firefighters for all aspects of an emergency operation. It includes maintaining physical and mental fitness over long periods.
This training not only enhances the technical skills of the Orne fire brigade but also their ability to work as a team in challenging environments. Colonel Sébastien Planchon, the programme manager, is convinced that these training sessions are essential for improving the effectiveness of future operations.
